As an ex-academic, I also feel intensely the author's sense that leftist academia bears a lot of responsibility for the absolute wasteland that North American political discourse has become—the environment where Peterson became a superstar.
Peterson's obscurantism is no worse than what is the standard style for critical theory. Humanities scholars have wasted decades on pointless studies of people who are essentially the Continental leftist equivalents of Jordan Peterson.
I'd more readily point the finger at administration and so on than the people struggling as adjunct and assistant profs to cobble together a subsistence living. Still, even on their end, the objective of scholarship isn't mass appeal.
If you're going to go that route, it's an institutional problem about the structure of academia, not really the result of good or bad scholarship. A lot of my friends are those "useless Foucault scholars" and believe me, they don't love the hoops they have to jump through either

Look at bell hooks, Rebecca Solnit, Chris Hedges, Wendell Berry -- even Noam Chomsky just about fits the bill. They all have something rather like wisdom to offer. And I know there are others. Who are your intellectual heroes?

There’s a lot of truth to this, there is a vacuum of intelligent people making reasonable critiques of the excesses of leftist academia, which leaves it to people like Peterson to give voice to the other side, and the nuttier parts of his views get more credibility because of it
