And I fully agree that in many conversations like this a major challenge is that the common idea about bigotry is that it's really vicious and obvious, when actually it can be subtly damaging attitudes held even by otherwise good people

pay attention to what trans people are saying about things like this. Try to listen and make sense of it and let that influence your attitudes toward trans people IRL

I think it’s important to not label the subtle misunderstandings as “bigotry” though, because those people are probably decent and open to changing their minds, but if you tell them they’re bigoted, they interpret that as being called overtly hateful.
