Be careful with that line of thinking. It's dangerously close to being of a similar mindset to the less tactical members of the group you oppose.

I think people are mostly hung up on it because they think "performer" means "this person can be swayed out of the alt-right." Which does not at all seem to be what you're saying.

The distinction between performer and true believer I don't think makes a person more or less likely to leave the alt-right, and I wouldn't say you were saying that. That's a different conversation to have.

I agree. The results are the same, but and understanding it adds a great deal of context.

I don't understand the confusion here. Of course you go to the altright party when invited. Of course you shake hands and smile and laugh at hurtful jokes. And you remember everyone's name, face, and who they associated with.

The idea of a performer-believer dichotomy implies that there is a difference between them at all. Are true believers not also performing their prejudice? Are performers not taking on the mantle of true believer to elicit the reactions they get? What can we really learn?
-
Do we really expect these people to self-identify? Why give them the opportunity to divert blame from themselves and try to absolve themselves of the harm that they perpetuate? At best, they're complicit, at worst their obfuscating. I don't think either is functionally different.

You (or someone) *might* be able to appeal to a role-player's inner self. A true believer will only change once they've experienced a significant personal betrayal, and perhaps not even then (and certainly not in a predictable direction).
