Hitchens was never particularly adept at forming good arguments. He just happened to excel at presenting bad arguments.
He also put a very charming, inviting face on a lot of reactionary impulses. Even many leftists felt the pull. There're probably lessons to be learned here...

Absolutely. If one could take his ability to sell a bad idea and marry it to a set of good ideas, then that person would have a powerful tool set to making the world a better place.
Sadly, I think a lot of that comes down to how a posh, British accent and affect hits an American audience. Sadly, I think that makes Carlgon the new Hitchens, now with even worse ideas.

There was something about his blunt, "I'm the only one telling the real truth" style that made people feel superior for agreeing with him, even though most of the arguments were very old and cliche

he was a leftist until late in life...a complex person. Sometimes he was right and sometimes he was wrong. He was ALLOWED to be scathing...which we as women are not allowed to do by the same people on the right who deify him. He was an SJW on issues that impact HIMSELF.
