I think, to cis people, the desire to transition is so inconceivable that when very young people do it, they assume they must have been coerced by sinister doctors and activists.

It's not just children either. I started transitioning at age 28 and certain people said: "All those trans people you talk to online have gotten to you. They're talking you into becoming something you're not."
