Also I know lots of women (myself included for a long time) who've internalised the idea that catcalling = compliments without realising.

First time I got catcalled I couldn't really hear the guy so I was just like "what? WHAT???" By the time I figured out he was asking my name

I was frustrated I just yelled 'why do you need to know???" So yeah, first couple of times are just gonna be weird.

Yes it is because catcallers are scary.

Also, it depends on a few things. There's a whole part of the catcalling conversation where certain women feel genuinely complimented by it.
