The story arc starts with a male protagonist and ends when he achieves his goal of becoming a woman. And men's stories get more attention.
But this is of course a terrible way to tell the story. It's just a misunderstanding, not even really a story about a trans woman.
i'm skeptical of this read as the primary reason? it's also seen as more scandalous/taboo/whatever
Oh I don't think it's the primary reason. But I think it's a factor.
It's taboo because it's hard for people to understand why someone would want to give up boy status.
And also by its very nature invalidates our gender identity.
