are already settled issues. We know that slavery is immoral. This issue was settled over a century ago.

My point is that there was a time in history when slavery WAS open for debate, and it was through that debate that slavery was abolished.

Okay yes, well in those situations then of course it's good to debate it. But we don't need to keep going back and reopening these issues.

I'm not reopening the issue of slavery, I'm drawing a analogue between this issues to illustrate the importance of public discourse.
