the reason they do that is a lot of whites refuse to think of themselves as belonging to a class that includes non-whites
In America it is simply much easier to appeal to racial solidarity than class solidarity

I don't think that's as immutable as liberals think it is/ want it to be. Liberals hate socialists more than they hate fascists after all.

Yes. That goes back to the 1600s and American colonies. It was a design feature then. Baked in for 3 centuries, hard to get rid of.
