What troubles me is how totally one-sided these pleas are. We're always asked to empathize with bigots. The emotional burden always on us.

Correction: An audience that is indifferent. For a compromise to work they have to be open to compromise. And many of your critics are not.

I think this works well with alt-litey people you know that are going down that path. "converting" strangers is a LOT LOT LOT harder.
