Another reason for overt TERF cruelty is society at large is still very transphobic: they know they can get away with it.
If trans activism makes significant progress they'll have to cut the cruelty back, at least in public appearances.

So, I'm TOLD that in most meatspace LGBT circles, TERFs are not tolerated whatsoever. Online it's easier for them to find platforms.
