Can't say I've seen any coddling, personally. A lot of obfuscation, and dancing around issues perhaps, but coddling? No.
Pretending that "being called Nazis" drove people to Nazism is coddling. Shifting the blame to everyone else is coddling them.

That alone seems pretty unlikely, but polarised racial identity politics may have contributed to pushing people in that direction.

But no, I don't think calling people Nazis has drove people to be Nazis. I think the political atmosphere right now however is fostering it.
