After the Civil War, the complaint was yanks were colluding with blacks to rip away white Southern autonomy.

In the early days of the KKK it was "blacks are taking our country from us" + "raping our women." Cf Birth of a Nation

The KKK—white terrorists who ride around with torches spreading fear and intimidation—have always thought of themselves as "defenders"

Premise 3: political violence can always be "understood" in a context where the violent actor has a grievance.

4: Some grievances are more legitimate than others.

When 9/11 happened, you could say, "with America's global imperialist actions, this was bound to happen!" Many leftists did.

When Micah Xavier Johnson killed 5 cops in Dallas last year, you could say, "with ongoing racist police abuse, this was bound to happen!"

Now, in these latter cases there is a legitimate grievance. But the violent response is not directed or justifiable.
