Not to mention governments enacting religion far more strictly over their populace. Islam is in the stage Christianity was in in the 1600s

Surely modern interpretations of scripture by many christians are far more liberal due to micro scale reformations, rather than major ones.

Whether or not you put that onto reformation from within the religion or outside influence seems somewhat irrelevant, to me at least.
