Most everyone in my age group can tell that same tale. If religion isn't patient 0 for anti gay attitudes then its def the plague ship
not saying that religion isn't a major propagator and enabler of homophobia (obv it often is). But China is not super gay-friendly either.

Places like China and North Korea replaced religion with adoration for their dictators. Might be a distinction without a difference.

Religion... I imagine in a culture that is steeped in traditionalism and until recently had mounds of preasure to keep your family line
