It makes the statement "lets avoid a Reichstag fire" nonsensical. What could Communists have done to cause OR prevent it?
most sources I find seem to indicate it's still an open question who actually started the fire.

It surprises me that this is considered an open question. I had been under the impression that Göring himself admitted to it.
