I think part of the problem is that a lot of them view "racist" as an extreme; that unless you're an active KKK member...

...who's lynching black people, you're not racist. The idea that racism can be more subtle, or more veiled, is lost on them.

We've had this kinda of thing in Ireland in the run up to the marriage equality referendum, a prominent LGBT figure said...

This caused a tantrum from the religious right in Ireland, and a talk show hosted a panel about the word homophobia...

...to which one panelist said that was a word that should only be used for someone who's beating going around up lgbt people.
