The safest thing to do in my situation is to put up a front of complete invincibility, to pretend nothing ever gets to you. But that wears you down internally. I recognize that I'm extremely privileged to have the platform I have. But it's also kind of shit.
We're expected to shut down the "human" parts of our brains to be able to survive operating in this environment.
I have to admit this is what I always missed in "free speech" advocacy: tolerance of this kind of behavior is an endorsement of a kind of terrorist censorship.

For fucking real. It's really obnoxious that the best way to publicly deal with it seems to be... to not publicly deal with it. Hurts the soul, honestly.
So you could say that hate speech leads to self censorship and limits your freedom of speech out of fear from these hateful commenters.
Bingo. Free speech ‘enthusiasts’ ignore the chilling effects on speech that come from normalized hate speech.
If nothing else I am grateful for the sacrifice you've been making. I know it's not without some compensation but that doesn't make it less stressful, or potentially dangerous. A hard job, even if you're paid well is still hard.
