Yeah, in the online communities im in whenever someone asks what cis means thats what they're told, so i assumed it was true for the longest time.

Nah I believe it comes from the pair of latin prefixes cis- and trans- which mean on this side/ on the other respectively

We use “cis” in chemistry. If some functional groups are on the same side they will call something cis. I think it’s Latin based.
