can someone swing me a pc dictionary plz no irony, im srsly mortified i apparently had been using “hon” on everyone i like and recently found out its a slur (thanks @ContraPoints) and i am SO SORRY and NOT OK. I had no idea it had originated as a slur. If anyone uses it STOP

This has bothered me a bit since I found out about it. Living in Maryland, "hon" is just a common colloquialism buy I never knew it had other connontation. It's just another thing I try to be cognizant of when I speak.

Australians call their girlfriends, siblings, children, etc. "hon" all the time. It's the shortened form of honey and we use it as a term of affection

I have been watching the brilliant British crime TV series Vera, where the female protagonist calls absolutely everyone «pet» and «luv». I have had British strangers calling me «darling». Cultural context makes a difference.
