Yes, I was. I was tooling around with some right wing idealology then, and back in the 90's and early 2000's it was a bit unheard of. So whenever I saw a trans person, it invoked a fear response in me, and it instantly made me view them as less than human. This hurts to type out.

I have/had a dear friend who is a Terf and I read a lot of the material to try to digest it. What kept me from swallowing was the continuous return to the disgust response that motivates the point of view.

At best it points out that biology plays a role in patriarchal oppression and seemed to define misogyny distinctly thus. But mostly it got stuck on mocking trans women who couldn’t “pass” and finding all the examples of rapists that identify as trans.

I've seen many Babyboomer lesbians go through the horrible heartbreak of watching their butch friends transition and hear these friends say that they were always men. Accepting this truth would mean that they had loved men and had men in their spaces with them all along.

Because so much of their identity and life experiences were wrapped up in rejecting men, they just weren't willing to believe that the women they'd known and loved and held so dear to their hearts were actually men the whole time.

I got vaguely interested in "Gender Critical" ideas at one point. At the time, I thought trans people were just gender non-conforming, and that identifying as trans was a "workaround" for society, instead of embracing non-conformity.

Thankfully, I didn't get too deep into the GC community itself because it quickly became apparent that most people there were openly hostile. I did spend quite a bit of time on r/ChangeMyView arguing with trans people though.
