Frankly, they were clever, in a sneaky trickster way, to use the military as the starting point. Many trans people are, unsurprisingly, leftist and anti-militarism, so it can be easy to make them think that eligibility for the miltiary is something they want to give up.

I don't know whether that's true or not but I do know that we are 2-3 times more likely to volunteer to serve than the general population. As a third generation combat veteran and someone approaching her 30th year in service, I wouldn't describe myself as anti-military.

I'd love to see your take on the DoD study https://media.defense.gov/2018/Mar/23/2001894037/-1/-1/0/MILITARY-SERVICE-BY-TRANSGENDER-INDIVIDUALS.PDF … Lot of reference to "unit cohesion," which echoes the gay ban and the ban on women in combat roles
-
Folks in my unit are likening the transgender ban to the ban against people on medication, eg diabetics. But I'm not sure hot perfect that analogy is. General sentiment I've seen is that no one cares how you identify so long as you're mission ready.

I don't think this sets much of a precedent for other sectors. The military has always had far more leeway when it comes to hiring discrimination than any other sector. Being allowed to set a maximum entry age, barring mental health conditions, etc.
