not that cis ppl shouldn't stand up for trans rights—obviously they should since people listen to them and that's really important and we need them! so I think the credit @Hbomberguy has gotten is deserved
But I also hope it translates into lifting up the voices of the trans ppl who have been advocating about this for a long long time.
It is sad, and true. I would also say there is more layers to it that make it more sad. I say this as an ally that does work to take the heat off of minorities when I can, while trying not to speak for them or to steal limelight away from them. But that is surprisingly hard.
Basically all of western media has taught people to see the default hero of "the story" as the tall conventionally attractive/masculine white guy. I know that citizens treat me better than my minority coworkers because of that.
Public perception: Trans ppl standing up for trans rights is self interest. It's a necessity. Cis-ppl standing up for trans rights is selfless. It's charitable. True or not - that's how many people judge this sort of thing.
As for whether cis-ppl should speak for trans ppl: The more allies the trans community gets, the more often cis-ppl will be required to speak on their behalf. That's not a problem, it's a strategy.

If that's what it's going to take for people to listen then it couldn't be a better cis man. I think the fundraising effort only gained clout with the people who were supporting his efforts including iconic tans women such as yourself.
