Why is it so cheap? Is this being outsourced to a country where $1 means a lot of money? I have nothing against it I just think it’s surprisingly cheap. As long as the pay is fair in context.
-
Rev employs freelance caption editors and pays them very low rates (sub-$10 an hour); as a result, the quality is low compared to professional caption houses. The pay isn't fair, but the freelancer market is desperate.

I worked around aircraft for many years and also must admit some loss of hearing due to my long love for Icelandic and Finnish Death Metal, so captions are a godsend for access. Old people who listen to loud things like to know stuff!

I used to caption for rev, they run a freelancing platform that relies on people being desperate enough to work for terrible pay. Don't recommend.
-
I used to work there too, I have no reference for what terrible pay is cause I'm just an unemployed leech on my parents, but I did get cut with a policy change that was sent to my email and implemented very quickly before I checked my email.

This. Rev makes the most sense for YouTubers from a financial perspective, but, like most things, you get what you pay for. If it can be afforded, professional captioning houses will deliver a better file (and they are likely to lower rates if a script is provided).
