The goal is to stir up hatred and distrust by appealing to emotional hinges: fear, disgust. Other go-to tropes: -LGBT "recruiting children" -made-up links to pedophilia -suicide rate concern trolling -"erasing biological women" -LGBT acceptance as "attack on free speech"
Ordinary people who don't know much about trans issues readily buy these talking points. People who fall for it never experience their bigotry as hatred. They feel like they have reasonable concerns because they've been made to feel that way by the rhetoric of the hate groups.
This. From an initial position of hating "SJW killjoys" I slipped into circles of people perpetuating transphobic view points and I just adopted them not thinking much of it. It took me a lot of introspection and interaction with actual trans people to see my errors.
The most dangerous thing is when people are manipulated into hatered without realizing it. Its the hardest ignorance to erease.
I’ve tried convincing those around that teenagers transitioning isn’t as simple as going to the doctor once and getting hormones then and there. One person seemed on the cusp of getting it but just couldn’t see what was right in front of them. It’s tiring.
They were talking about trans people saying “But they’re never happy and they never fit in” and I just wanted to scream “The point of transitioning is so they can better fit in and feel comfortable in their own skin.”
This is a big reason why I don’t think it’s worth debating people who’s positions are rooted in hate. They’re not arguing in good faith anyway, and neutral observers assume both sides have valid arguments.
So infuriating to hear people lie. I'm not transgender. I find myself drawn in though because the arguments are so stupid & cruel. But when there is understandable anger, hateful people go to their fainting couches & talk about bullying. The both-sidism makes responding hazardous
cisgendered heterosexual guy here. I've learned a lot from watching Natalie's videos. I'm sure I've said something ignorant and I'm sure I will again but I'm trying to learn. I like the learning part. So kudos and TY to Natalie.
There are so few occasions where I can convey these facts Natalie. I call, email, and tweet all my Senators, and Representatives to be aware and fight, but that's a note into the etherness. Always Best Wishes to you and all.
