Honest question: Doesn't the government need this information though as to do census? Does this not also complicate the Affirmative Action for companies to ensure diversity? Whats to stop someone to change sexes to game the system or change back because of actual need?

Makes sense. I for one can’t wait to sink money, time, effort, and the destruction of most of my friendships and relationships with family members so I can “game the system”

Nature is a scientific journal, a highly commercialized enterprise. Editors at Nature are not working scientists. Assuming that Nature knows science is naive at best and actively trying to perpetuate the chokehold that some journals have on the scientific endeavor.
