I feel like I'm from an entirely different era of trans history as people even just five years younger than me. In grade school, college, post-grad not once was anyone asked for their pronouns. The word "transgender" was not mentioned in my health education.

We have to carry kindness for each other intergenerationally (sp?) because this is truly the first time we all can speak to and at each other in such a way that the internet provides. Words carry different meaning based on context, which can sometimes be timelines.
-
I think about this often: how can it be bad if someone genuinely identifies as the word you mentioned in your thread? I know of people back home, in their 60's/70's, who likely do. Are they bad people? Are they wrong? A term can be outdated, but I don't believe a person can be.

Yeah, it’s a classic tipping point, an overnight improvement after decades of tireless activism. So outsiders wonder if we’re “moving too fast” while we’re frustrated at how slow it is. I’m hopeful for the younger generations who more often get to transition young, as needed.

I'm a few years older than you both in life and transition, and a current undergrad. I am in awe of the reduced hurdles in terms of baggage that my younger peers tend to have and exposure to them has helped my previously regimented ideas of gender to soften greatly.

(and I hope exposure to me has helped widen their perspectives on valid trans narratives... so many young transitioners, many living stealth, with no idea what it's like to live as another gender for over a decade of adulthood barely knowing what transness was)

There is something truly awesome about living long enough to see stuff that was once the height of enlightened discourse become problematic, even if it does give you whiplash.

I wrote and article in 2003 for the Daily Telegraph and when I look back at it now, and I cringe, then I realised how much the language has shifted since I came out in 1998..

Hahaha when I read this thread having come out in 2001 I was like "Contrapoints is one of the olds?" Yay for us, the real olds. :P

I just met a 16yo trans boy. It was the first time I had met a younger trans kid and I was astonished by the difference in attitude and confidence. Just goes to show how helpful for mental health it is for them to be validated from a young age
