Let's concede that many of the typical accusations are unsubstantiated or hyperbolic: that he's a TERF, a chaser, an egg, that he "wants trans people dead," that he's a pulsating hive of pure malevolence—you know, Twitter-speak for "he kinda fucked up."
The hyperbole of these accusations kept me in the dark about Singal longer than I should have been. In fact I don't feel I need to rescind anything I previously said about him. I said he's not a TERF (someone who cloaks transphobia in radical feminism). Well he's not.
I do wish there were more of a commitment around here to being precise with callouts, to limiting accusations to what is strictly speaking true, instead of this raw expressionism. It's a distraction from what is *demonstrably* wrong with Singal. So here's the real T.
This is messy so strap in. [cw transphobia] Singal was inspired to begin his career as a cis commentator on trans people when he read cis journalist Alice Dreger's book "Galileo's Middle Finger," a defense of Blanchardism (a defamatory quack theory of MtF transsexuality).

He goes to them for information, although he then didn't cite them as sources in the Atlantic article, which pissed some of them off. He's also mutuals with a lot of them, as well as right wing figures known for their transphobia, such as Laci Green and Cathy Young.
He's like every TERFs favorite Journalist despite not really being one of them. Like how Joddy B Poops is every internet fascist's favorite psychologist byt Joddy isn't a nazi himself.
There was a brief moment in which it was possible to believe that he was acting in good faith. It closed quickly and obviously.
so many people now due to the age of “TERFs don’t interact” being seen as Enough in terms of standing against TERFs don’t even know what a TERF IS, hence wholesale accusations of all transphobes as TERFs which sucks bc it sounds like these misguided people attacked you :(
There is no shortage of TERF sympathisers who are some other form of transphobe, though - and given the willingness of TERF's to play with the Reich Wing in the name of further institutionalising transphobia, I do understand where the confusion can come from.
