Thought for today When talking about plain English call it ‘clear content’. Don’t say it’s ‘more simple’, say it’s ‘faster to get to the task’ or ‘more efficient’. Consuming content has more to do with time than intelligence. Let’s kill this dumbing down argument. SR

Some comments about using ‘language’ instead of ‘content’. Content designers might use video or graphics - anything that fulfils the user need. May not be words. And, as @sharonodea points out: we often work with translations. Plain English isn’t always relevant. SR

I guess it’s the same as always: know your audience and behave accordingly! Use language for words, content for other things. Whatever it takes to get the message across! SR

Thanks for that... talking to a client at the moment about their services. Been struggling with the term “Plain English” as much of it is in other languages.

Translation is often overlooked! Which is insane.

Great advice plus a nuanced deployment of alliteration which is such a powerful tool when used sparingly and in-context. Content cat thinks the same ; ) he’s nodding agreement as I type this 🐱

I still think Content creates unnecessary ambiguity and plain language is a terminology that sounds more clear and it is already popular. Interesting subject for user testing.

I agree about the user testing... And in some ways we need to educate our audience (in my case local authorities) that it's not just the words on the page that makes things clear
