Careers were devastated. A large chunk of Facebook’s staff should go to prison for this.

Facebook is one of the single worst things to happen in the 21st century. That company should be shattered and the Earth should be salted in its wake.

Yet another reason to be glad I unfriended
@facebook. -
I chose to
#DeleteFacebook just over a year ago and don't miss it one bit. At this point, it's become crazy to stay. What will it take for a mass exodus, I wonder? -
Right now Facebook is a one-top server of many needs--staying in touch with social contacts, reaching customers (espec. for small indie businesses), keeping on top of business news & opportunities (in certain industries)--that no one else serves at that scale.
-
Many people will not leave Facebook until someone builds a viable Facebook alternative (or alternatives).
-
I'm not on Facebook, never have been, and I'm not a Facebook apologist--I hate it. I just have a lot of compassion for other people who hate it and feel trapped there. I hope someone is building the
#FacebookKiller that makes it possible for them to leave. -
I was referring to individual FB users who use it as a social/news utility, but good point about businesses. I'm not terribly sympathetic to unhappy users who feel they "have to" stay, since everyone I know who's left it found in hindsight that they actually didn't. (Cont'd)
-
Most people I know who dislike but nonetheless continue to use FB do so because their relatives (especially older relatives) also use it. With families geographically-dispersed and older users less likely to adopt new and unfamiliar services, FB's success relies on OAP users.
-
#StartupIdea: Create a super easy to use, high accessibility site for posting pics, vids, and specifically for staying in touch with family. Call it FamJam. Test it with seniors. Build an ethical company around it. Steal that portion of FB's user base. - 6 more replies

This is jaw dropping. I hope someday we look back on how the rise of the Internet was commiserate with a totally insane pyramid scheme based on advertising that didn’t work.

I don’t have time to read this tweet Aaron pls post a quick video summary

I often look forward to the day I pivot to silence

Ok, so we got a doc that seemingly implicates Facebook. Seemingly Fair. What about the "DIRECT consequence of 90% of media orgs firing writers" part? Any docs/sources?
-
Can I push back against "or just google"? Posting a source saves tens/hundreds/thousands of people from having to fact-check for themselves. It's a tool against disinformation. (I know you did post a source, so thanks.)
-
Added the just google bit because the phrase “pivot to video” specifically was so ubiquitous for a while that searching for it brings up hundreds of articles about layoffs
-
I thought maybe so — sorry if I came on strong. But spread the word! I see others saying "u 2 lazy 2 google?" It's a dangerous idea, IMO, that we should all be expected to fact check everything we see, all the time, without help. Some burden is on the OP.
-
no worries, totally with you
-
Another thing to bear in mind: Google personalises search results. I could Google it and get only articles about what a great opportunity it is, because that's what Google thinks I want to see. So someone else finding their own sources may not help make your point.
