  1. Just told Sherrod: “Honey, if I go first, don’t spend your time talking to Google.”

  3. Because this is the measure of a future president. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I can jump off a chair, which proves only that I can jump off a chair.

  4. Howland Davis II is a Vietnam War veteran who wants to know why a friend’s name is missing on the Wall in Washington. When I asked about his service, he pulled out a photo of young 1st Lt. Davis, during Tet. “My hand shakes,” he said. “Might hurt your photo.” No sir. We see you.

  5. On our way to a book talk at Akron Public Library. I’m interviewing Sherrod about his book. He brings his copy, and I have mine. As those little tags indicate, I have my questions. He knows better than to ask which ones he’ll be answering today. Every marriage has its mysteries.

  6. The American electorate will deliver the final verdict, in November.

  7. 3/ It’s true that we never stop being parents, but it’s also true that our kids never stop teaching us things about ourselves. If we’re lucky, they remind us of who we want to be so that the best parts of us can bloom again. May your Sunday land gently.

  8. 2/ Now she is 32, a working mother of two children who think she is made of magic. When I recently said I didn’t want to get my hopes up about something, she said, “Mom you always told me, ‘Get your hopes up because you don’t want to miss all those happy moments along the way.’”

  9. 1/ When my daughter was five we wore matching Keds and denim jackets, and sometimes she twirled in the evening light as I shared with her the best parts of what I knew.

  10. Love this convo w/ & . Often “the impulse from writers when they think about an obit is to turn somebody into a marble statue who is to be worshiped & celebrated...I just want to paint a far more complete picture whenever possible.”

  11. Tonight I watched journalists in our nation’s capital roped off and rerouted so that Republican senators who voted for no witnesses in this trial could scurry off without explaining their votes to the American people. If you think this is OK, you no longer believe in America.

  13. Most common question from fellow Americans at the grocery store, in airports, at cinema concession stands, in reader outreach: "What can I do?" Answer: Turnout. Turnout. Turnout. Do all that you can to increase voter turnout in November.

  16. I grew up in the Heartland, in small-town Ohio. These are two of my elementary class photos. They reflect life as I knew it throughout my childhood, lucky me, and the neighborhood we call home now in Cleveland. This, too, is the story of Middle America, and we must not erase it.
