I made an offhanded comment in JUNE *on Twitter* and even at the time I knew someone would say "But Gettier!!!" but I didn't expect it to wait seven months.

There's nothing wrong with them. It's just not necessary to bring up every godforsaken time you mention knowledge, especially in a casual way on a casual medium.

You're a mathematician, James. "Fringe corner cases" are worth making some fuss about, no? ;)

In any case, the problems with JTB run much deeper. How to avoid justifications relying on infinite regresses? If no-one's around to believe it, what of the 'knowledge' in books? Can one have implicit knowledge w/o 'belief'? And so on. Disappointing to see you so dismissive. :/

They’re not corner cases. One can argue that they’ve emerged in important occasions during the history of science. But beyond that, Gettier cases point out a problem with a universal definition—one that is not supposed to have exceptions.

It does you no good to show contempt for philosophy as a whole, given the nature of the work that you want to do.
