My guess is that a good number of defendants are also interested in bypassing those processes, as well—particularly given the benefits they sometimes receive in exchange for saving the state’s severely limited resources. I think that often gets gets lost in this.

If the disparity between the offer and what they would seek at trial is too great then defendants should have recourse. Trial is a right but prosecutors treat it like punishment. The bullying into plea bargains won’t stop until prosecutors are held to a fairness check.
