    Imperative programming is about context-sensitive, sequential computation ('recipes')--which can be accomplished (isomorphically) both with side-effecting statements, and also with pure monadic expressions.

    As you said, FP means programming like in the lambda calculus: with pure (not necessarily total) functions as building blocks. But imperative programming, at its core, is programming with statements which are state transitions much like a turing machine.

    Contrary to popular opinion, functional programming is not the opposite of imperative programming. Functional programming lets you program with effects as values, which makes imperative programming more concise, testable, and powerful than ever before.

    Functional programming has and will forever mean exactly one thing: programming with (math) functions, i.e. computation expressible in the lambda calculus. The implications of that definition, however, are unclear to beginners, who don't see how FP can do stateful programming.

    Change the meaning of "functional programming" a few more times, and it will mean absolutely everything and absolutely nothing
