90 people braved the rain and cold to begin our Centennial conversations last night. This is the point: engage our leadership and the community in matters of importance to the future of our lovely city, the place we call home. Next event is on Feb. 11th!

We gathered 90 people at our first Centennial event last night, in spite of the rain and cold. The discussion is exactly what we want: public engagement about matters of importance for the District and its residents. Next event is February 11th!

D.C.'s top two leaders disagree on how to save downtown. Bowser wants to tinker with Height Act, Mendelson says development isn’t the solution. axios.com/local/washingt

The Constitution's Enclave Clause, Height of Buildings Act, Home Rule Act prohibition on challenging the Height Act -- all this and others can be seen as impediments to certain kinds of development, but they're also prudent constraints that help make the Federal City what it is.

If true, this would be a pretty silly fight. We already tried this once 10 years ago and ended up with a compromise of 20' habitable penthouses. There is already so much untapped height available throughout the the city. twitter.com/AlexKomaWCP/st…

Older buildings should always be considered for re-use for a variety of reasons, not the least of which is charm. The older the building, the more reasons why history has permitted the building to still stand, and these deserve consideration.

Building reuse is a vital and powerful tool to reduce emissions. Hear from MSA's Patrice Frey and @Arch2030's Vincent Martinez about why we can't build our way out to net zero > bit.ly/3GuLhrf
"Reusing and retrofitting existing buildings is vital to achieving significant emissions reduction targets. The question is no longer whether to reuse what we can, it's how to do it."

Seeking to raise the federal height limit to build higher downtown where there is a chronic historically high vacancy rate doesn't make practical sense. Fill the vacancies first, then consider what if anything additional is needed.

We hope the new persons added to the waitlist have better luck than their predecessors, and hope that existing list isn't scrubbed, again.

Today the D.C. Housing Authority is holding a mass event to get people on the waitlist for public housing into vacant units. Roughly 24,000 people are on the list, which closed in 2013. Officials want to get through the entire list this year and eventually reopen it.

Another superb piece of DC history! Just one minor correction: By 1968 when we won our court appeal, was not "new"; we had been around for 45 years. We're enormously proud of our contribution to the freeway defeat & are still going strong for good city planning.
