  1. In Doha for a couple of days and had a chance to catch up with Stéphane Ipert and see the fantastic Qatar National Library: Rem Koolhaas building, rapidly growing special collections, strong user base. That maze in the middle is the special collections gallery!

    Visit with Maronite Patriarch Bachara Boutros al-Rahi to discuss events in Lebanon and the Mideast and then a surprise reunion with Fr. Khalil Alwan, who allowed to digitize the Lebanese Maronite Missionary Order (LMMO) manuscripts. His new book relied a lot on !

    In Beirut for the Catholic—Oriental Orthodox Theological Dialogue (twelfth year for me!). Hosted this time by the Syriac Orthodox Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II. Good to see images of MSS helped to digitize shown on the walls of the church here. Both are in !

  4. Great visit in Timbuktu to the libraries of the ELIT project— Al Wangari, Al Cadi Al Aqib, Imam Ben Essayouti. Conditions are difficult in the region though our visit coincided with a lull in the various conflicts. And the weather was fantastic!

  6. More from the renewal of the and digitization project— signing, laughing, and visiting the studio. Thanks to Abdel Kader Haidara and everyone at SAVAMA for work on 25 libraries so far with several more to come in 2020!

  7. Back in Mali for the annual December visit to re-up the project with SAVAMA-DCI for manuscripts brought from Timbuktu before the 2012 crisis. Good for another year with (140,000 MSS digitized so far!) More Mali news soon.

  8. Great visit to for research and to meet with team. Worked on their two MSS of Evagrius’ Letter to Melania to compare with DFM 00745 from the Dominicans in Mosul, now in — was thrilled to find the text there in complete form. Stay tuned for more!

  10. Up to Timbuktu for our ELIT project. We concluded Phase I as partners with ; now working to start Phase II as just a project. Thanks to and for transport and care on the ground! More soon on the results.

  12. Thrilled to be back with partners at Abu Maqar Monastery in Wadi Natrun Egypt. Abounas Wadid, Berti, Mercurios, and Philopater with our field director Walid Mourad. Project moving along to bring more Coptic manuscripts to the world!

  13. Great visit with Fr Samer Yohanna, superior of the Monastery of Notre Dame des Sémences near Alqosh. He’s building a center in Erbil to house their manuscripts. Showed him the work at CNMO for inspiration. Hoping can help him out!

  14. Happy to be back at Abp Najeeb’s Centre Numérique des Manuscrits Orientaux (CNMO) in Erbil— their great work partnering with continues! Also gave him a vHMML tutorial to see the fruits of our collaboration.

  15. Off to Iraq to meet with amazing partner the Chaldean Archbishop of Mosul (since December) Najeeb Michaeel OP. He and he his team of young Iraqis digitized thousands of manuscripts in Iraq and Turkey, some of which have since been destroyed or hidden.

    Millennium Club tour of northern India continues with great visits to Jaipur, Deogarh, and Udaipur. Tracing both Moghul and Rajasthani culture to understand our work here better. On to Jodhpur tomorrow!

  18. In Delhi with friends catching up with the Raja of Mahmudabad and his son Ali about our work with their library in Lucknow. Being greeted with flowers upon arrival at 3:35am is “only in India”. Touring sights in Delhi and prepping for Agra on Thursday!

  19. Wrapping up annual Catholic-Oriental Orthodox Dialogue in Rome with Armenian, Coptic, Ethiopian, and Syriac friends of . Good sessions, good spirit, and audience with Pope Francis with a chance to chat with him. On to Delhi for the HMML Board/MC trip!
