It's getting close to New Year's Eve, and this painting may be requesting a sacrificial baby. Use caution. You know who to call.pic.twitter.com/CSWv4laabL

Do we really need to bring up the Sistine Chapel? /s

It underwent restoration in 1980-1994. Without consulting artists the decision was made to strip the varnish/clearcoat to "brighten" the frescoes. That coat, however also contained crucial intentional shading. IMO the ceiling has looked a bit comic book-like in comparison since.pic.twitter.com/xKpp8hAaHH

But at least it wasn't as bad as what happened to the Ecce Homo painting in the Sanctuary of Mercy church in Borja, Spain. (The damage was actually done by an 80-yr old untrained fangirl, not Bob Ross)pic.twitter.com/c8L0a7ATYw

As an art historian I love watching the restoration process on paintings. I’ve seen a few of the Julian Baumgartner restoration videos and they’re so awesome.

Glorious to see in action, what I've always felt will happen. When the light is brought to bear on true Art.
