Ocasio-Cortez’s views on top marginal tax rates are much more mainstream than Susan Collins’s.

This is 2019 in a nutshell, most likely.

So weird/unseemly: The extremely thorough 1600 word (!!!) daily political brief from Collins hometown paper doesn't mention her decision to run in 2020. It isn't news until Susan Collins says it's news, apparently.

Ah. Collins now trying to walk back her announcement and the AP is happy to help! Guess her team wasn't cool w/ her launching her reelection campaign in an interview w/ a random reporter. Oops!

Can't find any local pieces on this. Presumably because Susan Collins didn't ask the Maine press to cover it? Think about how weird that is.

What do Gardner and Collins have in common? Only two GOP senators from blue states up for reelection in 2020.

When reporters write about Susan Collins's lurch to the right they almost invariably make it sound like something that's happened *to* her rather than something she's *done* to the country. Enough of this junk.

Agreed. And let's never forget that Sen. Collins endorsed, campaigned and fundraised for someone even her spokesperson admits is an angry racist.

Will make one new year prediction: Expecting Susan Collins to embrace some (weak? insufficient?) climate plan in 2019 as political winds shift--probably similar to plan she backed in 2009 before going mum. Unclear how she'll explain being MIA on the issue last 10 yrs

My view: The story's ratification of a false narrative seems the result of carelessness & maybe kneejerk deference rather than something nefarious. But...that's all it takes! Media mythmaking re: Collins not (mostly) about malevolence. It's about sloppiness/submissiveness. 5/5

Murphy also noted that the Collins wrinkle was a late edit to an existing story on the Coast Guard issue. He said the changes were made on the phone w/his editor from home (i.e. not ideal circumstances). Did he contact the CG or White House to verify Collins account? No & no. 4/X

I told him that comparison struck me as tortured and that the lede clearly pushes the reader to infer a link between Collins action and the pay fix. Murphy stood his ground but conceded he could see how it could be read that way and expressed regret if folks saw it like that. 3/X

Notably, Murphy said the piece *doesn't* try to credit Collins for the pay fix. When I drew his attn to the lede (below) he denied it implied causation, likening it to writing (my paraphrase) 'After I went outside, it started to rain.' That doesn't mean you caused the rain. 2/X

Had a 17 minute call with reporter yesterday on his Coast Guard/Susan Collins story (). He graciously answered all of my questions. 1/X

Of course that probably has it backwards: It's precisely *because* Collins seen as so powerful that ME reporters rarely muster the temerity to test her claims & instead take her word as gospel. Collins adept at leveraging this dynamic to tell all sorts of tall tales.

Big picture here is that Maine's most respected news outlet (deservedly so!) swallowed and regurgitated a totally fabricated story w/o checking its accuracy--even though the story was fed to it by a powerful pol who stood to gain from its publication. Cautionary tale.

Another Maine outlet now running with this as well. Note how the tweet and piece avoid explicitly linking Collins to the result (while priming the reader/viewer to draw that linkage.)

Notable: Piece from suggests Trump told staff to resolve the issue on *Wednesday*--2 days before what PPH describes (w/o evidence beyond Collins own words) as Collins "last minute intervention." Both can't be right.

I called and emailed reporter to ask why his piece credits Collins w/ solving the Coast Guard payment issue while articles from NBC News, , WaPo, ABC News & all contradict this framing. Will update if I hear back.
