I know it seems irrational. But you'll be surprised at the number of smaller/newwr creators who end up using auto generated thumbnails. Some don't have the time, nor resources to create custom thumbnails. If the system can make it easier for those creators, then that's good.

And this is actually a top request we get from creators who use auto-generated thumbnails. The data and insights we'll get from this small test will help us improve their effectiveness across all of YouTube (and benefit a lot of people).

Okay, but why not restrict it to just those creators? The only response you're seeing is a negative one, because the people this will affect (the ones with auto-gen) don't know it's happening. Put a banner on auto-gen videos letting them know. And let it be an opt-in test.
