A good apology involves: 1. An unconditional “I’m sorry” (so no “to anyone offended”) 2. A recognition and explanation of why your behavior was wrong (to show you understand it, and aren’t just paying lip service) 3. A commitment to changed behavior.
Random thought this spurred: it’s not just the people *offended* who deserve an apology. If I’ve said something hurtful, I’ve also wronged people to whom I’ve set an example that saying those things is okay.
Exactly. When you’re apologizing for _public_ transgressions, your apology should just be addressed to everyone. And a private apology should *still* not include “if you were offended.”
