Players: Enjoy your HS playing days. There’s nothing like playing in front of a crowd of your community members, friends & family & playing alongside classmates. The sense of community & school pride is unbeatable. Relish it; rejoice in it; respect it. It’s over before you know.

Players: You are very fortunate to be involved in sports, but one day that will end. Will you be able to say: I gave real, sincere effort I was a great teammate I was coachable I was thankful I made the most of every opportunity If you can’t, you need to make some changes now.

Players: Remember, coaches DO play favorites. They play those who are tough, skilled, competitive, play hard every game, are accountable, don’t complain, accept roles/coaching, make no excuses & are capable. Ultimately, coaches play kids who give the team the best chance to WIN!

Players: If you’ve let your team/coaches down, learn from it & fix it. Part of growing is making mistakes. You have to learn appropriate responses to adversity. The failure isn’t in making mistakes, but in not learning from them. Today’s failure will be tomorrow’s life lesson.

Coaches: It’s an honor to be involved in the lives of kids. At the end of your career, will players say that you: Built meaningful relationships Taught life lessons through sports Gave them authenticity Loved them as people first Use your influence to improve the lives of kids.

Even the most talented athletes can fail if they: Let ego take over Don’t work/practice hard Aren’t coachable Play selfishly Don’t respect their role Aren’t willing to listen/learn/cooperate Follow the wrong people Don’t care about success of the team Give little effort Are lazy

Coaches: You will have to battle the February blues. Burned out coaches perform about as well as burned out players. When it comes to practice & workouts, be short & efficient with high intensity rather than being there for long periods of time. Presence doesn’t equal production.

Sports teach values you will live by forever. Discipline, leadership, respect, honesty, loyalty, facing adversity, pride. If you’re lucky enough to be part of a team with values, be smart enough to use them in life. Let them guide you. You will live by them long after the game.

Players/Coaches: Bad situations sometimes seem to get worse before they get better. Don’t get down/believe things are hopeless. During hard times, more growth, learning, preparation takes place to build strength for the next round. It’s where toughness is made & passion thrives.

Coaches: There’s absolutely no better formula for success than a clear purpose, high expectations, accountability, family atmosphere, trust & genuine, positive relationships. Build a strong team culture that will see your players not only through the game, but also through life.

Players: You are not done playing defense when your man/area doesn't have the ball. Help defense requires more energy & attention than playing 1v1: positioning, talking, rebounding, bumping cutters, tagging rollers, taking charges, stopping drives, closing out, skip passes, etc..

Players: Big goals take big commitments, big energy, big effort, big sacrifice & big focus. Big goals aren’t easily attainable. You have to learn all you can, spend countless hours practicing & apply your knowledge without any fear of failure. Big anything can’t be small minded.

Parents: You can buy your kids a phone; pay for college, a car. You can buy sporting equipment & uniforms, but you can’t buy their success. If they want it, they have to earn it. Success isn’t easy. It’s gritty & hard. The “price” comes with a lot of extra work, trials & failure.

Players: To be successful you must be ultra competitive. To be competitive you have to take risks & be willing to learn. Being afraid to fail, afraid to look foolish, afraid of embarrassment will cripple you as a player. Afraid has no place on the court. Find your drive; compete!

Players: Your daily habits, who you surround yourself with, what you read, watch & listen to now determines who you’ll be in 5 years. Be particular/intentional now, so outside influences don’t determine your future. Create great habits with positive people. Eliminate negativity!

Players: Instead of comparing yourself to other players, study the habits of great players & why they’re great. Make a plan for your improvement. Spend your time comparing yourself to who you were last week, last month, last year. Your GROWTH is the only thing you can control.
