Most people still don't know how bad global heat and Earth breakdown could get. And powerful people lie and gaslight and downplay to prevent change. And the media is still largely silent. It's maddening. We could lose everything. Time is not on our side and yet we dither

Unimaginable heat in China 🇨🇳 The longevity and intensity of the heatwave is hard to comprehend. Too many heat records to count, both day and night. Beibei hit 45°C for two consecutive and some places not falling below 34°C at night. The heat is ongoing...

Climate scientist here. With all due respect Mr Dimon, you’re the one with the thick skull. How is it you can’t see? Deadly heat, fire, flood, storm, drought, crop failure. Infrastructure, economic, ecologic, geopolitical collapse. By expanding oil and gas we risk everything.

Much of climate policy is obvious. The real problem is that too many people in charge are paid off by the fossil fuel industry, and furthermore the ruling class doesn't want to pay for the transition to prevent it from slamming poor / working class households...

We must make permitting fossil fuel projects harder, renewable projects easier. Goal: end the fossil fuel industry ASAP which is causing increasingly catastrophic global heat. Should not be hard to understand.

Fossil fuel executives and lobbyists bribe elected officials to block climate action, slow the transition, and expand fossil fuel production. They deserve prison, not riches. An example:

Global heat is an emergency. We must treat it as such. Heat and fires will continue to get worse each year until we end the fossil fuel industry. #EmergencyMode

#Palermo, a #fire in the city: residents flee in cars. And because of the heat, shops are closed. In the afternoon, at a temperature of over 43 degrees, the flame broke out in the Borgo Nuovo area. The fire is fueled by strong winds. Evacuation began. #Sicily. #Italy

I don't think this is sanctimony on my part. She fights as hard as she can to block climate action. OK, yes, pro-Trump Republicans are even worse because they are completely fascistically unhinged, but not being like that seems maybe too low a bar for praise, to me.

The love-fest liberals are having over Cheney is gross. Yes she's anti-Trump. She's also a climate denier, against voting rights, against abortion rights, against healthcare rights, against taxing the rich, pro wall building, pro guns, pro torture, pro bombing innocent people...

I still think Earth breakdown is basically all we should be talking about until we get it under control and civilization on track to a livable future. At the least, we should be talking about it and addressing it with much greater urgency. It threatens everything.

My dream is to grow to the point that we have science-based, captivating TV ads, billboards, and powerful education initiatives around the world, countering fossil fuel industry disinformation. It's crazy, at this point, there's no such federal initiative in the US for example

We've been an all-volunteer team for the last two years. We incorporated as a non-profit, we learned a lot, we made some great videos, we raised some funds. But all-volunteer is challenging, plus we want to serve climate disobedience actions w media support more effectively

Thread on first chapter coming soon. I wanted to reread the book, see what I still like and what I might completely disagree with now - things have changed so, so much. And Earth breakdown has gotten worse in 10 years faster than I ever imagined it could. So fast...

...and the editor was like "that author, Peter Kalmus, why is that name familiar?" and he dug out my manuscript from the pile. I was so excited that they wanted to publish my book! They gave me a tiny $3000 advance (which I donated to climate orgs) but it was never about money

For two years before this, I'd been reducing my own use of fossil fuel. I found I loved living with less fossil fuel! At the time I didn't see anyone enjoying this process of FF reduction & communicating it. So I started giving talks at libraries, churches etc. Talk after talk...

Before we get into the first chapter, here's a story about how it got published at all. At the time, c.2012, I was a new postdoc in climate science and the barrier to publishing a book seemed insurmountable. For four years I worked on the manuscript without a clue how to publish

Here's a thread about my first book. I'll write one thread per chapter and then link them at the end in a thread of threads below. 🧵🧵 My book is available online for free, or you can buy it to support the publisher.

No, you cannot have meaningful climate action and fossil fuel expansion at the same time. The two are diametrically opposed

Unfortunately, it's damaging when prominent climate activists and scientists defend flying, because it strengthens cultural support for business as usual and undermines public understanding that we are in a climate emergency. We should all call for systemic ending of fossil fuels

We'll get rapid change when enough people accept that burning fossil fuel causes global heat and global heat kills people, therefore burning fossil fuel kills people. When this happens policies and culture will shift fast. E.g., flying will become a social negative

Know that climate disasters this summer are only the beginning and they will get catastrophically worse until we end the fossil fuel industry. Everything humanity does depends on a livable climate. End fossil fuels rapidly and equitably. Switch into emergency mode

New York Times write a story where the climate activists who are actually challenging the system since the whole system needs to change are the good guys challenge

Schumer owes Manchin a deal to fast track new fossil fuel projects. Both Schumer and Manchin have taken hundreds of thousands in bribes from fossil fuel special interests and there can be no new fossil fuel expansion if we are to avoid devastating and irreversible global heat

So here's the thing NYT, there is NO "sustainable tourism" that involves flying on planes, and increasingly as the planet continues to overheat there will be NO "coping" with heat waves. Please tell the truth. The sooner we end the fossil fuel industry, the more we save

As important as the fossil fuel industry may be, having a livable Earth is even more important, and we don't get to have both
