Claus Wilke Retweeted Data for Progress

As news outlets are creating increasingly complex data analysis and visualization projects, we should start demanding fully reproducible analysis scripts with every story.https://twitter.com/DataProgress/status/1076886420843831298 …

We re-created this NYT plot. The chart does not actually show a trendline and the relationship is mostly explained by Social Security. pic.twitter.com/MtFpWcIYUo

What in the world is up with that fake trendline? it's like a regression line escaped from some neighboring graph and is just causing a ruckus, rudely. I mean: That is just wild.

The problem with "data science" is they receive just enough statistical analysis training to be dangerous, especially since almost no data scientists are proficient in the context of the source material

I can’t figure out where the heck that “trendline” came from. Even if I try things like excluding all the blue dots so we’re only looking at the ones Trump won, it still looks like it should be far flatter than that. Did they...weight things by something like residual^10?

If it wasn't simply drawn by hand then they must have done something like regress x against y but then plot it as y against x.

The flaw common to all software-based analysis, whether SPSS, Excel, Python, or even R, is that users can be accomplished enough to produce charts that look visually impressive but that don't have statistical validity.

I will probably never understand why there is even the need for a trendline for such noisy data. What value are they adding to the chart by adding it in?
