A sign of a well-managed department is that the vast majority of Asst. Profs are promoted with tenure. We don't hire people at UT-Austin if we don't expect them to be tenured. That is not true at all institutions, but it is becoming more common.

I have received a Freedom of Information request for all emails in the past year w the words “Jonathan” or “Pruitt”. Combined with an aggressive letter about me addressed to the Press that runs AmNat, I am feeling harassed for doing my job to ensure quality of published science.

At what point are American companies going to just open offices abroad? Software engineering, product design, R&D , none of this has to happen in the US.

A preprint of my work with Susko, & Bielawski is out! We investigate protein evolution under stability-induced epistasis and define a new phenomenon: the evolutionary anti-Stokes shift, where the propensity for an amino acid decreases due to changes in other sites.

The switch to online education is massively time- and labor-intensive for instructors. Everyone I know who is delivering courses online is doing an incredible amount of work above and beyond the usual, with more frustration and less appreciation. (And no more pay, of course.)

As an example that 100% renewable is possible, consider Germany. It's already at 50% renewables this year. That's only a factor of two from 100%. We can totally do this.

Nuclear is the preferred "green" power source of the fossil fuel industry, because it's not actually a viable competitor.

No. Wind + solar + batteries + power-to-gas is sufficient for 100% renewable, CO2-neutral power supply, and it's cheaper, safer, and doesn't have a toxic waste problem.

New blog post: PCA tidyverse style. I've been struggling with doing PCA using an idiomatic tidyverse approach. Now I think I've figured it out.
