A2: This speaks to a concern that I have in education, which is the deficit model or the culture of poverty mindsets that are found in a lot of educators. When I read this my first thought was, how can teachers help empower students that they pity for being alive.

Wearing my pin for my job talk today, because I truly can’t imagine even being an academic today without the support of all the beautiful workers, students, and organizers I’ve met through my union 💕

However, as undergraduate student groups have been signalling for quite some time, the University is sorely lacking on providing those services for its students and workers.

When I was young, our plane was about to touch down when the engines fired on full blast and we came around for another pass—there‘d been another plane on the runway. Ever since, I have an intense this-is-my-last-breath-before-utter-annihilation moment during every landing 😣

Breaking: A group of Instacart workers in Chicago just voted to unionize-- a historic first. This victory sends a powerful message to gig workers around the country who are fed up with working conditions.

The number of academics using smiley emojis in emails with me has *dramatically* up-ticked in the last month

My grandma’s card from the 1958-1959 school year side-by-side with my current card. The union makes us strong 😭✊🏼🍎

In exciting news, my boss let me move back home to work remotely so I can be around my support system and be more financially stable. 🥳🥳🥳 I guess being the lead author on a paper about how to have a successful remote postdoc paid off!

For Chinese New Year I wrote up some of my thoughts about the crucial role the Chinese diaspora can play in overcoming the great power conflict between the US and China

And ofc pure math has its differences in methods/epistemology from others. But even if you don’t call it an experiment, when your work leads you to adjust an axiom or add a hypothesis, it’s based on something you’ve observed about the world in an effort to understand it better.

Ofc if we make this about the institutional conditions of science, rather than the work itself, that completely changes the question. Many mathematicians don’t want to be scientists because they‘d be held to professionals standards that don’t make sense. But this feels different?

Been reflecting this morn on why it bothers me so much when people argue that math isn’t science. My first attempt at an answer is that “math isn’t science” often feels like a proxy for “math is removed from the real world” and that’s a gateway to “math is apolitical.”

As Zimmer traveled around the country promoting the University’s famed "Chicago Principles” on free speech, professors requested a public forum with Zimmer to discuss the Principles. Here’s what they got instead.

“This is how things are done at the University of Chicago. Students of color fight for changes for years. We’re called crazy, entitled, or unrealistic. Then, years later, the University co-opts what they were against for so long.”

I decided "Wait, I'm a topologist! A linear homotopy is probably just as good as using fractional derivatives, right?" As you can see from this disappointing animation, the answer is no. It turns out that, much like in life, sometimes the path you take is what's important.

Anyway, as my students showed, turns out “a mathematical representation of your face” is a pretty good recipe for a picture.

I ran a really interesting eigenfaces () project last year. We talked a lot about covariance, eigenvalues, and facial recognition; we also talked about deployment of this tech by the CPD (), the U.S. military, and other abusive powers
