At a Google News conference I heard a moving presentation by a Dalit man who pointed out that almost all US tech company hires of Indians were hires of Brahmin, in essence gaining diversity points in our country while perpetuating a caste system in theirs👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻https://twitter.com/VICENews/status/1064856273705938947 …

Another way of looking at this, maybe, is as if @jack had posed with BLM activists only to be “white lives matter”ed by Valley SVPs in his company and elsewhere.

Anyway this scandal is a BFD in India, per the BBC. And of course abuse and harassment of women in India, especially Dalit women, is horrific.

You all know it takes a lot to make me sympathetic to @jack. I hope he/Twitter don’t apologize too hard for this. He may have not known he was kicking a hornets nest, but not a bad one to kick.

The name of that presenter is @mondalsudipto “Dalit Camera: How India’s “untouchable” class uses technology to tell their own stories”

The anti lower caste bigotry (and claims of reverse bigotry against the upper castes) in some of these replies is breathtaking but I witnessed the same in India. Not among everyone, but a lot.

As is true everwhere, sadly, some who once had absolute privilege, resent loss of that privilege, exaggerate the modest opportunities now presented to some of historically excluded and vilify them for those meager opportunities.

Link to presentation? I'm Indian, schooled & worked in India for 10 years. I don't think it's that simple. Not everyone has a caste, it's not something employers can ask when hiring, and, most tech jobs come through University placement with reservations for the underprivileged.

No doubt there are problems and it runs far deeper than just hiring. At Yahoo, for example, we hired across the board, but we also invested (through our charitable arm) in education from the elementary level for underprivileged children.

You are so clueless! The brain drain from India of these “upper caste” folks is because of a discriminatory environment AGAINST them. You read that right - the so called ‘underprivileged’ folks get quotas in everything from schools to govt jobs WITHOUT having to meet talent reqs.

TBH the aim of quotas is not uplifment, but vote banks. Look up the Creamy Layer issue. A true democracy would support ALL socio-economic backwards and not some on the basis of ‘caste’. Demands for meritocracy quashed by violent protests by the ‘dalits’. Now go get a life.
