    Delighted to publish our financial exclusion follow up report this morning calling on Government to establish a statutory duty of care for banks & other financial service providers to act in their customers' best interests - to be backed by legislation and enforced by the FCA.

    I'm so hoping the Chancellor heeds our call for dedicated funding for schools to support pupils' mental health and wellbeing as part of the overall catch up effort needed in next week's Budget

    The pandemic has taken a huge toll on children & young people's mental health. The Govt must not overlook their wellbeing in its Covid recovery plans & I are urging the Chancellor in his budget to provide a fund to schools for mental health support 👇

    Pleased to see former Health Secretary and Chair of the Health Select Committee has also now realised that we need to fix self-isolation. Here's the proposal that I sent to last week on the financial AND practical support needed:

    Why lockdown isn’t working fast enough and what we should do next: a thread..... Not just borders and monitoring new strains, but time to fix the biggest flaw in our current strategy, namely that three quarters of those with symptoms do not self-isolate.

    This is so important and Government must make continuing access to mental health services a key part of their response to Covid.

    The next few weeks will put real pressure on the mental health of millions of people, especially vulnerable, marginalised and young people. We are seeking explicit commitment from the Govt that mental health services will remain fully open and able to respond to people’s needs.

    So important that the forthcoming Spending Review has a strong focus on wellbeing - ie what really matters to people - and that “ levelling up” isn’t all about large physical infrastructure projects.

    Excellent article in Times today by Philip Aldrick on why government should target increasing wellbeing as we attempt to level up. On same theme read the open letter to PM from Richard Layard and me in S Times tomorrow on building back happier.

    Very pleased to be discussing impact of the digital divide on social mobility at . We don’t expect pupils from disadvantaged backgrounds to buy their own books or other paper based resource materials. So why do we expect them to provide their own devises/IT access.

    Digital access should be a basic entitlement, says APPG co-chair .

    More funding urgently needed for the early years sector including an increase to the Early Years Pupil Premium as discussed at recent Even before COVID children from poorest background were already 11 months behind their better off peers before they start school

    Baroness Tyler: found the impact of shows 1/3 of early years providers in the most disadvantaged areas may have to close within a year. The Govt needs to introduce a package of support for early years providers

    This is so important when you realise that at least 70O, 000 disadvantaged children don’t have proper access to computers or the internet to study at home. This growing digital divide during lockdown is v damaging to social mobility - a point I will stress at next

    It is the duty of the Government to ensure all disadvantaged children have access to computers and the internet to study.

    Just asked my oral question in the quoting from last week’s report on the impact of COVID 19 on the nation’s mental health. Far greater urgency and action required from Govt to prevent mental health epidemic. Response needed on a par with physical health.

    The scale of deterioration in mental health is unlike anything seen in years. The Govt needs to do more to prevent the mental health crisis from turning into an epidemic.
