    1. Policy For Women‏ @PolicyFor Jul 19

Hi @nikeshshukla Yesterday you gave a talk to 100-200 civil servants about story telling, where you criticised @HJoyceGender book and @Docstockk book because "they are books about trans lives but not written by trans people" (paraphrase). Well, they are not about trans lives.

It’s obvious Nikesh didn’t read Helen’s book before speaking on it, because she addresses this during the introduction. Direct quote from page 5: “This is not a book about trans people.” She isn’t writing about trans people’s lives or experiences, but the implications of policy.

why call the book “trans” then? call it literally anything else. oh wait… trans people’s lives are directly impacted by the policies that try to control them

As a policy person (not a philosopher) the 'implications' of policy are not 'impacts' of policy. Implications are hypothetical, polemical and subject to the biases of the writer. They're potentially not backed up or even informed by evidence, whereas 'impacts' very definitely are

Douglas Murray's an example of a non-policy person who tried to write about the 'implications' of anti-racist policies in Europe. He included a range of polemical anecdotes & interpretations of evidence, many of which did not bear scrutiny as they often weren't impacts in reality

Even if this were true this is mendacious as quite obviously "policy" governs all our lives - if it had no impact what would be thr point of writing about it? You're simply trying to dehumanise trans ppl & frame polices that would segregate us as some abstract debate.

Of course it is about trans people, it's incredibly dishonest to pretend otherwise.

A book about policy that directly affects trans lives (including people with ovaries that keep getting erased from the narrative…) ~is~ about trans people. There’s a lot of unfounded assumptions flying around just to bolster a pile-on tbh.

So if someone writes about abortion, they don't need to interview anyone with a uterus because they're just writing about the policy, not people 🤔 Is it possible to be anti trans and not have a galaxy brain?
