Yes! Unfortunately, sometimes a teacher can't give (due to other stressors). They still teach the same things, but students see the difference in care given. When this happens, I wish teachers themselves were more supported/cared for, instead of their 'teaching' being questioned.

No matter what the mode of learning or structure of the class - genuinely caring is what builds real engagement and learning ☺️

100% agree. It also works for study, work, life, most things: when you care, you do better.

RT friends! This is the only national award recognizing faculty for service & teaching. Who are your champions? Nominate, nominate, nominate. A great way to win recognition for your program & campus, too.

💯 And I think the trick from a faculty development perspective is helping teachers recognize when they are acting in ways that explicitly or implicitly communicate “not caring.” I think a lot of the perplexing choices teachers make come from simply not THINKING about them.

If you care, you'll eventually find the pedagogy.

I’ve taught English in a variety of contexts to all ages, from preschoolers to elderly people, & I don’t find the differences a big deal. What says about it coming down to caring about the learner & their learning is the reason why - no matter what the context.

Unfortunately, I also think efforts fought in the name of academic integrity often fly in the face of these core tenets. I’m interested in hearing how people approach the topic of academic integrity without sacrificing these principles.

Shameless self-promotion time: Helping to foster empathy and care is definitely at the heart of what I’m working on with my classroom conversation cards project

This. So much this. And I really wish this would've been the first thing they taught us in pedagogy ten years ago. Because this, unlike the gobs of comp theory they poured into my head, is actually useful.

Caring was a finding in my dissertation research in the context of the best mentors of online learners.

Very interesting thread on the importance of caring in education. As someone who is doing a lot of research on empathy, this really resonated with me.

Yes. Yes. And more yes. Teaching is about cultivating a professional relationship between teacher and student. Students who know that their instructor doesn’t care about them tune out the instructor. If you can’t care about your students, you shouldn’t be teaching.

Education research is all very well and important, but if loving-kindness isn’t at the core of how it is implemented, it’s all for nought. Start with the heart. 👇

This, but adding one: showing them that you care about the material also. So often, we fail to model the intellectual curiosity that we want them to have!

Yep. The most consistent feedback I get from students is "thank you for believing in me when no one else did". That's it. Life changing.

True. During a recent student panel for 100+ new profs, the whole group of undergraduate and graduate students emphasized (when asked) that the one thing we could do to be a great prof is to act like we really care. At that moment, as a 1st gen prof, I knew I would excel.
