In the Order of the New Moon, the Grinning She-wolf also serves as part of an initiation ritual for non-lycanthropic members. Not much is known about these rituals, though they are said to include the ingestion of silver colloids.

In some Nordic insular communities, old customs are still maintained. In ancient times, these groups practised initiation rites that often included the wearing of masks with the Valkyrie’s Grin. It is not known if this tradition is still related to Lycanthropy today.

The Grinning She-wolf serves as a memento for lycanthropic societies; to remember your inherent power as son of both man and beast. For this reason, imagery of wolves bearing the Valkyrie’s Grin have been commonplace throughout History.

Ancient Norse artifacts show the importance of the Grinning She-wolf legend. This silver-plated prow was found in a ship burial in Norway. It appears to have been the grave of someone powerful, who was buried along with several servants. Some of their bones showed bite marks.

The Valkyrie’s Grin is a trait where the lips extend much further than even those of wild wolves, exposing additional teeth. Due to the prevalence of the legend of the Grinning She-wolf, this is regarded as a desirable feature, and denotes power and reverence amongst individuals.
